Conference proceedings are the documentation of the abstracts of scientific presentations made in the conferences. It is less formal than the scholarly articles were the abstracts are published before it is well established as manuscripts. This can include original research, reviews, case report or series, best findings, techniques or methods. The proceedings recognize the researchers working on a topic and standing of research in particular domain.[1] This helps in knowing the latest research and move in similar direction at initial stages of research. It aids in connecting the researchers.
The acceptance of conference proceeding varies with universities, regulatory agencies and countries. Several agencies accept the conference proceedings of the researchers in parallel to publication, many provide percentage of points and few may not. The conflict arises due to differences in the content between the journal and abstract in proceedings. Additionally, it is not peer reviewed alike the manuscripts in journal. Few universities in India accept the proceedings and others provide the researcher with credit percentage. The interest in academic environment for conference proceedings are comparatively less when compared to Industrial colleagues. The companies get to know on the early data of research from the proceeding rather than waiting for peer reviewed process and the time delay in manuscript publications. A common consensus has to be achieved for wider acceptance of the proceedings.
The proceedings also improve the scientific impact, quality and value of the conferences. It mandates the scientific sessions of conferences to be organized with great scrutiny. The recycled papers, adapted thoughts, plagiarism shall get checked in the conferences. Additionally, there can be greater rejection of presentations after screening by scientific committee due to the critical assessment and knowledge of publication of proceedings in public domain. The wider reach through the public domains to researchers across the world shall improve the impact for conference and can attract quality research in future conferences.
The proceedings do have limitations. Before the publication of complete manuscript there can be loss of research idea or thoughts. The documentation and indexing data of the proceedings in the public domain can provide the researchers adequate protection and qualitative support to the support to the conferences and presentations made.[2]
Conversion of abstracts from proceedings to manuscripts for publication is significant. The authors or researchers have to follow the regular procedures of publications. The entire manuscript and title have to be restructured to avoid plagiarism. It is mandatory to cite or acknowledge the abstracts published in the proceedings. This shall provide better impact to the publication and additionally appreciated by the peers.
Conference proceedings shall be the order for future. It shall emphasis to maintain conference standards. The proceedings when published shall provide greater recognition for the conferences. If published by standard journals shall also give an protection to the researchers findings and wider recognition.[3]
