Introduction: The posterior regions of maxilla and mandible has always been a challenge for implant placement because of insufficient bone. Various augmentative procedures (eg sinus lift , grafting etc) are being followed in order to achieve adequate length and width of bone. However, various evidence based studies have proven that , in many cases these augmentative procedures lead to more complications. Various systematic reviews , have revealed that these procedures often lead to failures and patient dissatisfaction.
Summary: In earlier times , much attention was given to the crown – root ratio in an implant prosthesis. However, with the advent of short implants has rather revolutionised the entire implant system. Clinical as well as lab studies have indicated that the length of implant has no relevance to its clinical success. Rather decreasing the length and increasing the width of an implant has more predictable success rate. Additionally , it decreases the overall cost of the treatment and enhances patient satisfaction. Web based search was done in pubmed,ebsco,and scopus databases about short implant and results are analysed.
Conclusion: This paper evaluates various treatment strategies using short implants , its mechanical and biological advantage over long implants.
