Effect of Three Chemical Agents on the Dimensional Accuracy and Surface Detail Reproduction of Polyether Impression Material – An In Vitro Study

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to determine dimensional accuracy by measuring linear changes and surface detail reproduction by observing surface imperfections of soft medium body polyether impression material, by making impression of a standardized metal die surface treated with three chemical agents used in gingival retraction.
Methodology: Totally, 96 specimen of Polyether impression were made from standardized metal die (ADA specification No. 19), treated with three gingival chemical agents while artificial saliva acted as control. The groups divided were as follows: Group I consist of die treated with artificial saliva, Group II with 8% epinephrine, Group III with 100% alum, Group IV with 15.5% ferric sulphate. Dimensional accuracy was evaluated by comparing the linear measurement in the impressions to the standard die at 100X magnification. Surface detail reproduction was evaluated by viewing the impressions under low-angle illumination at 20X magnification to observe any voids, blurring or liquid pooling.
Result: The mean for linear measurement for group I, II, III and IV were found to be 19.997, 19.978, 19.975 and 19.957 respectively. Surface detail reproduction was analysed using Chi Square Test (p<0.05) and dimensional accuracy was analysed using Anova Test (p<0.05). To compare significance of dimensional stability in between groups, Multiple Comparison Tukey Hsd test was used.
Conclusion: Gingival retraction chemicals affected the surface detail reproduction significantly. However, the same chemicals did not affect the dimensional accuracy.
